What if the One we have been searching for has been quietly with us all along? Not far away, not hidden behind some spiritual breakthrough, not waiting for us to become better, holier, or more disciplined, but here, right now, closer than our next breath.
Many of us do not struggle with believing in God. We struggle with recognizing Him in the middle of our everyday lives. We move through our days aware of responsibilities, conversations, schedules, and concerns, yet often unaware of the One who is present within it all. It is easy to assume that God is near in sacred moments, but distant in ordinary ones, and over time, without meaning to, we can begin to live as if He is somewhere else.
I write this not as someone who has mastered this, but as someone who is still learning.
My first two books; God, In Every Step and God, In Every Heartbeat, were written as collections of simple reflections meant to walk alongside everyday life. They were grounded in a truth that continues to steady me, that God is present in every step we take and in every heartbeat within us, and those books became companions for the journey.
But this book comes from a quieter place in my own walk.
In His Presence: Sensing God in the Ordinary Moments of Life is not about arriving at something new, but about becoming aware of what has always been true. God is not waiting for us to invite Him into our lives. In grace, He is already reaching toward us, already drawing us, already inviting us into His presence, and the question, at least for me, has often been whether I am paying attention.
And here is the grace I continue to discover, we are not left to figure this out on our own.
The Spirit of God gently awakens us, opening our eyes in ways we could not open them ourselves and softening our hearts so that the nearness of God becomes more than an idea, becoming something we begin to notice and experience. He draws our attention to His presence in places we might otherwise overlook, in conversations, interruptions, quiet moments, and even in our struggles.
It is the Spirit who teaches us how to notice, how to respond, and how to walk with God in a way that is real and personal. As He does, He is not only helping us sense God, He is shaping us into the likeness of Christ, so that what we begin to recognize around us, He begins to form within us.
I also want to share something personal as you begin reading.
This book was not written casually. Each chapter, each sentence, each idea was immersed in prayer, not perfectly, but sincerely. There were many pauses, many quiet moments, and many times of asking the Lord to guide my thoughts and even correct them. I have included my own experiences, not to explain God as if I fully understand Him, but to walk with you as we both learn to notice Him more.
In these pages, we will move together through four gentle movements. We will rediscover the nearness of God, not just as something we believe, but as something we begin to recognize in everyday life. We will learn how to notice Him, with the help of the Spirit who makes us aware of God’s presence in the ordinary and the unexpected. We will reflect on our response, because even a small awareness of God’s nearness begins to shape how we live, speak, and love others. And we will consider spiritual transformation, not as something we force, but as something the Spirit patiently forms in us, drawing us into the likeness of Christ.
This is not a book about striving harder to find God, but about learning, slowly and humbly, to live aware of His presence, to notice the God who is already inviting us into a deeper awareness of Him in the ordinary moments of life.
If you continue into these pages, I do not have anything dramatic to offer, no formulas, no perfect steps, and no claim of having arrived, only an invitation to slow down, to pay attention, and to become open to the quiet work of God in places we might usually overlook.
Because even now, God is already reaching toward you. He is not waiting for the right words or the right moment, but is already inviting you, gently and faithfully, into His presence, into a deeper awareness of Him in the middle of your everyday life.
As you read, it may not feel dramatic. It may feel simple, almost too simple, but somewhere along the way you may begin to notice small shifts, a deeper awareness in an ordinary moment, a quiet sense that you are not alone, a gentle nudge in a conversation, or a new stillness in your heart.
And slowly, without forcing it, something begins to change, not because we are trying harder, but because the Spirit is patiently helping us see and respond.
You may begin to live with a growing awareness that every step, every breath, every moment is held in the presence of God, and as the Spirit continues His work within us, He does more than help us recognize God’s presence, He shapes us, quietly, into the likeness of Christ, so that our lives begin, little by little, to reflect the heart of Jesus.
So this is simply an invitation to open your eyes, to quiet your heart, and to respond to the God who is already inviting you.
Because the God we long to encounter has been nearer than we imagined all along, and as we begin to notice Him, even in the ordinary, we may discover that we are not the ones initiating the journey, but simply responding to the One who has been calling us all along.
